JONESBORO, Ark. (2/1/23) – After a weekend that saw multiple changes to Arkansas State track and field’s indoor records, a pair of Red Wolves earned Sun Belt Conference weekly awards, the league office announced Wednesday.
Jacob Pyeatt was named the Men’s Track Athlete of the Week while Camryn Newton-Smith added Women’s Field Athlete of the Week to her already lengthy list of accomplishments midway through the indoor campaign. Wednesday’s honors marks the second weekly award of Pyeatt’s career, while it is the third for Newton-Smith and first since Jan. 28, 2021.
Pyeatt posted the second-best time in school history in the 3000 meters over the weekend at the UW Invitational in Seattle. His time surpassed his previous best by over 10 seconds and leads the Sun Belt Conference.
Newton-Smith enters the week as one of the top pentathletes in the world, ranked fifth with the NCAA’s top pentathlon score of 4,356 after a stellar weekend at the Texas Tech Multis. The senior’s mark shattered her own school record in the event, while also setting the Sun Belt Conference record and was the top score in the world at the time she completed the five events.
The Greenbank, Australia, native set indoor bests in both the high jump (1.81m/5-11.25) and shot put (12.80m/42-0) portions and neared her top indoor marks in the other three events. Her high jump mark is the best in the Sun Belt Conference this season and is 20th in the NCAA, while she leads the conference in the long jump and ranks sixth in the 60-meter hurdles.
