JONESBORO, Ark. (6/7/22) – Bennett Pascoe is set to represent the Arkansas State track and field program for the second consecutive season, competing in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Pascoe, a 2021 Second Team All-American in the event, will first race in the semifinals at 7:02 p.m. CT Wednesday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The top five in each heat, plus the next two fastest overall times, advance to Friday’s final. If he finishes among those dozen, he will race in the final at 8:24 p.m. CT Friday.
ESPN2 is slated to televise both days of competition nationally.
2022 NCAA OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS NOTABLES
- Bennett Pascoe is Arkansas State’s first athlete to qualify in back-to-back championships since Carter Shell qualified for the long jump in 2018 and 2019. Pascoe finished 11th overall last season to earn a Second-Team All-American nod and became the program’s first men’s track All-American since Jaylen Bacon in 2018 as well as the first for the distance program.
- PASCOE’S PATH TO EUGENE: Pascoe – the two-time Sun Belt Conference steeplechase champion – advanced to his second straight championships by finishing second in his heat at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Fayetteville, Ark., on May 27. He ran a season-best time of 8:39.46 to earn the automatic bid.
- Arkansas State has had at least one athlete compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 11 consecutive championships. The 2020 national meet was not contested due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Including the 2020 indoor championships, which were canceled a day before the first day of the meet, A-State has qualified an athlete in at least one of the championships in 12 straight years.
- Pascoe is the only competitor from the Sun Belt Conference in the men’s steeplechase.
- Ten athletes from last season’s 24-athlete field return for this year’s steeplechase at the championships, including Pascoe.
- A-State is one of just three Sun Belt Conference programs with at least one athlete in the NCAA Outdoor Championships on the men’s side, joining UT Arlington and South Alabama.
