JONESBORO, Ark. (11/3/20) – Following Arkansas State’s two-match sweep at in-state rival Little Rock on Friday and Saturday, a pair of Red Wolves earned Sun Belt Conference weekly honors.
Madison Brown was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, while Tatum Ticknor grabbed Defensive Player of the Week laurels for the second time in her career. Tuesday marks the first time A-State has earned two weekly honorees in the same week since August 27, 2018, when Ticknor and Ellie Watkins earned Defensive Player and Setter of the Week.
Brown once again led A-State’s attack, totaling 37 kills (5.29 per set) against the Trojans, including 20 in Saturday’s 3-0 sweep, which marked the third time this season the senior eclipsed the 20-kill mark. She also hit an impressive .295 and aided defensively with six blocks and 14 digs, including nine on Saturday. Brown becomes the first A-State player to earn multiple conference weekly honors since Carlisa May earned the honor twice in 2018.
The Cabot, Arkansas, native leads the Scarlet and Black in kills (219) and kills per set (4.47) and ranks fourth on the squad in blocks (29). Brown also leads the Sun Belt in kills per set while ranking second nationally in kills.
Ticknor was once again a strong presence on A-State’s back row, collecting 43 total digs (6.14 per set) at the libero spot versus Little Rock. The redshirt junior also handed out six assists, aiding in the Red Wolves’ attack, while serving a pair of aces in Friday’s 3-1 triumph over the Trojans. Her honor Tuesday marks the second of her career, the last one coming on Aug. 27, 2018 as a sophomore.
The Grapevine, Texas, product leads the Red Wolves in digs (275) and digs per set (5.61), the latter which ranks third in the conference. She also ranks fourth nationally in both categories. Ticknor has notched 1,371 total digs in her two-plus seasons, a total which is currently seventh among active Division I players, while her 4.62 digs per set ranks third. Earlier this season, Ticknor tallied the most digs by a Division I player in a single match this season with 37 at UT Arlington on Oct. 16.
With the two honors on Tuesday, A-State now has four total weekly honors this season. Kendahl Davenport was the first honoree of the season, earning Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 6.
A-State returns to action for its final regular-season series, hosting division-leading Texas State for a three-match weekend. Friday’s doubleheader is slated for first serve times of 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., with the Saturday regular-season finale set for a 1 p.m. start time. All three matches are slated to be broadcast live on ESPN+.
