FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (11/10/23) – Freshman Rahel Broemmel continued her dynamic debut cross country season, automatically qualifying as an individual for the NCAA Championships with a top-5 finish Friday at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships.
Broemmel clocked a personal-best time of 20:20.7 to place fifth in the women’s 6K and advance as one of four individuals to the national meet held on Nov. 18 in Charlottesville, Va. Her fifth-place result is the highest regional finish by an A-State women’s runner in program history, and she gives the Red Wolves a women’s individual qualifier for the second year in a row after Jaybe Shufelberger qualified last season with a sixth-place finish.
A-State’s women placed seventh as a squad behind four top-50 runners, including Broemmel. Shufelberger placed 29th with a time of 21:23.5, followed by Elizabeth Martin in 37th, who crossed the finish in 21:41.2. Mary Beth Bailey earned a 50th-place result, finishing in a career-best 22:02.9, with Olivia Walter rounding out the Red Wolves’ scoring five with a 57th-place time of 22:06.9.
Cadence Lapp (84th – 22:36.6) and Maggie Hunter (124th – 23:18.5) finished as A-State’s displacers, but did not score.
In the men’s 10K, four Red Wolves ran career bests in helping A-State place fourth in the team standings with 157 points – the men’s program’s second-highest finish ever. Dawson Mayberry (30:05.5) placed 16th to earn All-Region honors, where he was joined by Jacob Pyeatt (30:23.7), who placed 22nd to become a two-time all-region finisher. Cash Kunkel placed 32nd with a time of 30:44.9, followed by Rylan Brown’s personal-best time of 31:01.6 that resulted in a 38th-place finish. Nati Enright clocked a career-best 31:21.9 to place 54th and round out the team’s scoring.
Freshman Jimmy Mann placed 84th with a time of 32:06.4 in his first collegiate 10K, with Noah McMurtrey finishing in 157th with a mark of 34:09.4.
