JONESBORO, Ark. (7/13/23) – After a stellar year in the classroom, the Arkansas State volleyball program received a United States Marine Corps/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, the organization announced Thursday.
Second-year head coach Brian Gerwig‘s squad was one of a record 1,332 collegiate and high school programs on the list and one of 10 from the Sun Belt Conference. The award, initiated in the 1992–93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale.
A-State boasted a year-long GPA of 3.35, which included a spring semester mark of 3.55 as a squad. In that spring semester, five athletes earned 4.0 GPAs. Thursday’s announcement marked the program’s ninth Team Academic Award since the inception of the honor in 1992-93, and first since 2017-18.
The Red Wolves open the 2023 season at home on Friday, August 25, hosting Little Rock (noon) and Louisiana Tech (6 p.m.) in a doubleheader inside First National Bank Arena.
