A-State Track & Field Teams’, Athletes’ Academic Success Recognized

July 16, 2020

JONESBORO, Ark. (7/16/20) – Arkansas State’s men’s and women’s track and field teams, as well as four athletes, earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors Thursday.

The A-State men and women were both named All-Academic Teams, as both boasted cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or better.

Individually, Hayden Hampton earned All-Academic honors on the men’s side while Grace Flowers, Allie Hensley and 2020 NCAA Indoor All-American Camryn Newton-Smith garnered All-Academic laurels for the women. In order to be recognized, student-athletes had to own a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 and must have finished the season ranked in the top 96 in any championship individual event.

Hampton capped off his senior year with a fourth-place finish in the heptathlon at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships. The exercise science major posted a score of 5,173 points to earn five points to help the men take its second men’s indoor conference title in three years.

Flowers earned a pair of podium finishes in the weight throw and shot put at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships, placing second and third, respectively. Her mark of 15.53m (50-11.5) at the Crimson & Gold Invitational in December topped the conference leaderboards in the shot put and earned her SBC Field Athlete of the Week honors. The junior exercise science major’s efforts helped the Red Wolves win their first women’s indoor conference title since 2013.

Hensley, a nursing major, placed fourth in the pentathlon at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships with a personal-best score of 3,707 to give the eventual conference champion women’s team five points on the first day of the championships.

Newton-Smith posted a sensational sophomore season, posting a school-record pentathlon score en route to capturing the Sun Belt Conference pentathlon crown, a mark that propelled her into qualifying for the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. She also took the women’s 60m hurdles title at the conference indoor championships.
