TOPEKA, Kan. (2/4/23) – Several Arkansas State track and field athletes opened a two-meet weekend Friday and Saturday at the Washburn Open.
Multiple distance runners also shined on Saturday for the Scarlet and Black, highlighted by Rahel Broemmel’s facility-record time of 9:30.02 to win the women’s 3000 meters. Her mark ranks second in school history, while Sarah Trammel earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 10:08.94.
Ethan Mychajlonka placed fourth in the men’s 3000 meters, finishing in a personal-best 8:30.79 while Nati Enright placed 17th with a time of 8:48.00.
Ryan Parson placed fifth in the men’s mile, running 4:10.72 to rank fifth in school history. Cash Kunkel finished in sixth with a collegiate-best 4:13.64 and Rylan Brown registered a personal-best time of 4:19.83.
In the women’s 800 meters, Kayla Wade placed fifth, crossing the line in 2:18.51.
Friday saw Aimar Palma Simo win the men’s weight throw with a mark of 19.25m (63-2) and Willem Coertzen hurl the implement a collegiate-best 15.65m (51-4.25). Selase Sampram also improved her career best in the women’s weight throw, placing ninth with a toss of 15.30m (50-2.5).
A-State’s throwers continued their strong performances into Saturday, with Evangelynn Harris and Sampram taking first and second place, respectively, in the women’s shot put. Harris hurled a mark of 15.11m (49-7) with Sampram posting a throw of 14.44m (47-4.5) in the event.
Coertzen earned a top-five finish in the men’s shot put, throwing 17.09m (56-1) to place fourth.

The Red Wolves conclude the weekend Sunday at the South Alabama Invitational in Birmingham, Ala., held at the Birmingham Crossplex, the site of the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships later in the month.
