A-State to Open SBC Baseball Championship Against UTA
JONESBORO, Ark. (5/19/18) – The Arkansas State baseball squad claimed the ninth seed in the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Championship Tournament and will open the event with a single-elimination matchup against eighth-seeded UT Arlington Tuesday, May 22 at 6:30 p.m., at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at Russo Park in Lafayette, La.
The winner of the game between A-State and UTA will advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament to face either Coastal Carolina or Louisiana-Lafayette, depending on the result of the other single elimination game between No. 7 Little Rock and No. 10 Georgia State, which takes place Tuesday at 3 p.m.
The tournament begins on Tuesday, May 22, and ends with the championship game on Sunday, May 27. All games of the tournament will be available on ESPN+ and the WatchESPN app. The tournament format combines single and double-elimination play. Two single-elimination first round games on Tuesday precede the start of double-elimination play between the remaining eight teams. The top ten teams, based on conference winning percentage will compete for the tournament title.
The Sun Belt champion will earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
This is Arkansas State’s ninth straight appearance in the conference tournament and the Red Wolves are the only team in the league to win at least two games in each of those appearances. A-State was 4-14 after 18 league games, but finished 7-5 down the stretch to get to 11-19 in league play and claim the ninth seed. The team sports an overall record of 20-31.
