ARLINGTON, Texas (4/7/19) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team suffered a 4-0 setback at UT Arlington Sunday.
Dodging rain much of the match, the Mavericks gained an early advantage in the match by taking the doubles’ points with victories on courts one and three. Anita Detlava and Berta Masdevall Masip dropped their doubles’ match 6-0 to start the day on court one while Pornpawee Pramethong and Amelia Guervremont lost 6-4 on court three. Shelby King and Shannon O’Brien were tied 4-4 on court four when UTA clinched the doubles’ point.
In singles’ competition, UTA won each of the three matches that were completed to finish off the 4-0 victory. The Mavericks earned wins on courts two, three and six on the day, each in straight sets. In other matches, Pramethong dropped her first set on court one, but had battled back to win the second set 6-4. Masdevall Masip took the first set on court four 6-2 and led in the second set 5-4 in her unfinished match while O’Brien trailed 1-0 on court five, but rallied back to tie the second set 3-3.
“We lost 4-0, but the matches that were left, we were about to win or had the momentum,” said A-State coach Kel Lange. “It is a really disappointing loss because we had our chances in the doubles and we were executing good game plans. The girls handled the rain delay well and gave themselves a chance to win again today.”
