NASHVILLE, Tenn. (9/18/23) – The Arkansas State tennis squad opened the 2023-24 season over the weekend earning three wins over two days of play in the Belmont/Lipscomb Invite.

“The second day of competition got rained out, so all the ladies got to play two singles and three doubles matches,” said A-State head coach Sujay Lama. “They fought hard and improved a ton over the weekend. We really should have come home with two more doubles win, but could not convert those match points.”

A-State went 2-8 in singles action and 1-5 in doubles. Yasmine Humbert and Nejla Zukic earned 7-5 doubles win over a pair from Ball State while Humbert also added a 6-3, 4-6, 10-1 singles win over Sofiia Paladi of Lipscomb. Rebecca Brody picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win over Libbie Hamilton of Belmont. Sarah Millard and Zukic fell in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-5) to the No. 1 pair from Belmont.

“Going to Belmont this past weekend was such a great experience,” said Humbert. “I was really excited to get the chance to play and felt really solid and clean with my ground strokes. Being with the team made my heart so full, we were laughing and enjoying our time together as a family. This weekend I saw positive changes in everyone, the way we all played, the way we cheered, how resilient we were and the way we interacted with each other. I can’t wait for dual season to start!”

A-State is scheduled to return to action October 12-16 at ITA Regionals in Lawrence, Kan.
