JONESBORO, Ark. (3/10/23) – Arkansas State women’s tennis head coach German Dalmagro announced the addition of graduate transfer Maja Pietrowicz on Friday. Pietrowicz, a native of Clinton Township, Mich., joins the Red Wolves following four seasons at Michigan State and is the highest rated recruit in program history.
“I’m so excited to welcome Maja to Arkansas State,” Dalmagro said. “I have known and seen Maja play for a few years now since we faced each other while she competed at Michigan State. She’s always been a very fierce competitor, and a hard worker. She will be a perfect fit here with her commitment, discipline and passion to compete at a high level. She will make an immediate impact in our program and I’m very thankful she has trusted me to be her next coach as she finishes her college career at Arkansas State.”
A four-year letterwinner at Michigan State, Pietrowicz had a combined singles record of 45-39 and posted a 52-31 in doubles. Pietrowicz is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete, three-time Academic All-Big Ten and three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. Pietrowicz will play for A-State in the 2023-24 season.
“I thought my tennis career was over until I was given this opportunity to play again,” said Pietrowicz. “I didn’t know how much I missed competing and working with a team, especially with the guidance of an incredible coach. To have another chance at doing what I love and having the possibility to make a difference in a program makes me feel unbelievably grateful. Let’s go Red Wolves!”
Last season with the Spartans, she was 12-15 in singles and 14-15 in doubles, playing at No. 1 doubles spot in 13 of those 29 matches. She held a 2-1 record against nationally ranked doubles opponents in 2021-22, defeating No. 38 Columbia and No. 50 Wisconsin. She was part of the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships, just the second Spartans duo selected in program history, and ITA fall championships in doubles. With her doubles partner Mary Lewis, the duo was ranked as high as No. 28 nationally in the ITA rankings.
Pietrowicz finished the 2020-21 season with a 7-6 record in singles competition and had a winning record in the No. 3 singles spot (2-1) and No. 4 spot (5-4). She posted an 8-5 mark in doubles action overall, going 7-3 in conference play. Back in 2019-20, she was 12-6 in singles and 12-10 in doubles play, appearing at No. 1 doubles in all but one contest. She compiled a 14-12 singles record and an 18-11 mark in doubles in her freshman campaign, 14-8 at No. 1 doubles.
Pietrowicz was a four-year letterwinner at Utica Academy in Sterling Heights, Mich., and ranked as high as No. 22 nationally in recruiting rankings during her senior season. She was the ITA Summer Circuit doubles champion at both the Notre Dame and Western Michigan events. Her mother, Anna, played basketball on the National Junior Team.
