In Friday night’s match against host Houston Christian, Arkansas State (4-1) battled back from down two sets to extend the match, but the Huskies (3-3) pulled away in the fourth set to take a 3-1 decision.
Three Red Wolves tallied double-digit kills, led by Kaitlin Whitlock’s career-high 16 on 46 attempts. The freshman committed just five errors to hit .239, while corralling 10 digs. HCU took the opener by a count of 25-17, as A-State hit just .147 in the frame while the Huskies attacked at a .419 clip. The Huskies rode that momentum into the second set, taking the first six points of the set but A-State pulled within two at 12-10 on a kill by Whitlock. The Scarlet and Black fired three aces in the frame and knocked down a trio of blocks, while hitting at a .282 mark. A-State totaled nine blocks in the match, including a season-high five by Yazmyn Billings.
Looking to force a fifth, the Red Wolves took an early lead before the Huskies went on a 4-0 run to lead 15-11 at the media timeout. HCU expanded its lead to eight, but a Whitlock kill sparked a run that pulled the Scarlet and Black to within five. HCU withstood the comeback attempt, however, clinching the match with a 25-18 fourth-set win.
