PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (9/10/23) – Teeing off the first round of the 2023-24 season, the Arkansas State men’s golf team turned in a 14-under par 274 to stand third among 14 teams at the Golfweek Fall Challenge played at True Blue Golf Club.
Loyola Marymount holds the 18-hole lead at 17-under par 271 with Washington State second at 16-under par 272. Richmond and Western Carolina are tied for fourth at 9-under par 279. A-State led the 14-team field with 27 birdies, but was a combined 5-over par on the 18th hole.
Thomas Schmidt paced the Red Wolves with a 6-under par 66 and is tied for second individually, one stroke back of Riley Lewis of Loyola Marymount. Schmidt had nine birdies and a bogey on his card going to the last, but double-bogey on the second-toughest hole saw the sophomore finish up at 6-under par. In his A-State debut, Chris Somerfield turned in a 4-under par 68 with a bogey on 16, the toughest hole Sunday, his only blemish. Somerfield enters the second round Monday tied for sixth.
Pierce Johnson was bogey-free with five birdies going to the last, but a double-bogey saw him finish up at 3-under par 69, tied for 12th individually. Jack Maxey (-1) and Anthony De Schutter (E) were also par or better Sunday while Devyn Pappas finished up 3-over par.
The Red Wolves begin the second round Monday at 8:15 a.m. (CT) with the third and final round set for Tuesday. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
