A-State Hosts Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships This Weekend

May 9, 2019

JONESBORO, Ark. (5/9/19) – This weekend the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships comes to Arkansas State starting on Friday and ending Sunday evening at the A-State Track & Field Complex.

The A-State men look to repeat as Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Champions while the A-State women look to avenge a one-point setback to women’s outdoor champion Texas State last season. Both the A-State men and women finished second at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships earlier this season. This is the first time A-State has hosted the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships and the first outdoor championships hosted on the Arkansas State campus since the 1989 American South Championships.

The Red Wolves enter the meet with a combined 54 marks this season in scoring position (top eight) on the Sun Belt Conference performance list. The A-State women have 30 marks inside the top-eight, including four atop the standings, while the men have 24.

Caitland Smith, reigning SBC 100-meter dash champion, leads the performance list entering the weekend at 11.25 seconds and is second in the 200-meter dash at 23.27 seconds. Smith is joined by freshmen Osereme Erewele (5th | 11.72) and Jonae Cook (8th | 11.93) in the 100-meter dash standings while Erewele is also ranked fifth in the 200-meter dash at 24.03 seconds. The 4×100-meter relay squad has the top time among Sun Belt Conference schools this season with a school record time of 45.13 seconds posted back on April 5 in Georgia.

Multi-event specialist Emma Nwofor will have a busy weekend as she has the second-highest point total in the heptathlon (5,361) while leading her peers in the 100-meter hurdles (13.53), fourth in long jump (6.12m/20-1) and fifth in high jump (1.75m/5-8.75). Sarah Michael leads the field in the pole vault after clearing 3.93m (12-10.75) at the Red Wolves Open in late April. Babette Vandeput has the top discus throw in the league thus far at 51.14m (167-9) and Grace Flowers (2nd | 48.85m/160-3), Evangelynn Harris (3rd |46.92m/153-11) and Hannah Higgins (5th | 45.74m/150-1) give the Red Wolves four of the top five in the event.

While the A-State men do not have an individual leading the performance list, the Red Wolves boast four second-place marks and three third-place rankings. Freshman Frank Massey ranks second in the high jump (2.12m/7-0.50), Michael Carr is second in the pole vault (5.43m/17-9.75), Carter Shell is second in long jump (7.59m/24-11) and Eron Carter is second in discus throw (52.75m/173-1). Heinrich Herbst ranks third in the 800-meter run (1:52.24), Courtney Thomas is third in the long jump (7.53m/24-8.50) and Eric Williams is third in the shot put (16.78m/55-0.75).

Adult all-session tickets are $25 while youth (ages 3-12) all-session tickets are $15. Adult single day tickets are $15 with youth (ages 3-12) single day tickets $8. Students with a valid Sun Belt Conference school ID and children under age of three will receive free admission. A ticket is required for re-entry. Fans attending the championships are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance.
