A-State Drops Tough Five-Set Battle At UT Arlington

October 16, 2020

ARLINGTON, Texas (10/16/20) – In the first half of a day-night doubleheader on Friday, Arkansas State dropped a hard-fought five-set match to UT Arlington at the College Park Center.

Down 2-1 in the match, A-State (4-2, 4-2 Sun Belt Conference) found resilience in the fourth set en route to forcing a deciding fifth set, though UTA (4-0, 4-0) relied on early momentum in the frame to escape with the win.

Lauren Musante posted another double-double – her fourth of the season – with a season-high 34 assists and 18 digs. The junior also recorded three kills and two blocks while serving an ace. Madison Brown led all players with 16 kills to go along with a career-high eight digs and two blocks. Josie Stanford added 12 kills and a season-high five blocks, while Tatum Ticknor collected a team-best 21 digs.

Brianna Hollingshed continued her prowess at the net, knocking down a match-high and career-high eight blocks (2 solo), the most by an A-State player since Madison Turner tallied eight on Sept. 28, 2018. Hollingshed also recorded a career-high nine kills. As a team, the Red Wolves registered 15.0 total blocks, matching the single-match high from last season. Through six matches, A-State has tallied double-digit blocks in all but one match.

Briana Brown recorded 15 kills to lead UTA, while Mollie Blank and Kylee Kapp handed out 21 assists each. Alli Wells tallied 33 digs, and Michaela Wright registered six blocks.

SET 1 – UT Arlington 25-20

A-State kept it tight early, with teams trading points until it was 7-all. UTA then went on a 4-0 run capped off by an ace by Kapp to make it 11-7 before Brown halted the run with a kill. The Mavericks then scored three unanswered to stretch their lead out to 14-8 when Stanford registered a kill to make it 14-9. After the media timeout, A-State battled back to cut it to 15-11 on a block by Paulina Sobolewska and Hollingshed and an attack error by UTA, but the Mavericks stretched their lead out to 21-14 before the Red Wolves called a timeout.

After UTA led 22-15, A-State took five of the next six points to cut the deficit to 23-20, but the Mavericks closed out the set with a kill by Briana Brown and an A-State attack error to go up 1-0 in the match.

Brown and Stanford led A-State with three kills each, while Hollingshed posted four blocks. Musante handed out eight assists and Peyton Uhlenhake collected four digs.

SET 2 – A-State 25-20

An early 5-0 run by UTA put the Mavericks up 7-4 before the Red Wolves called a timeout. Out of the break, A-State took two straight points on a kill by Stanford and a UTA attack error to make it 7-6 followed by a solo block by Musante that tied it up at 7. UTA then went on a 3-0 run to lead 10-7 before the Scarlet and Black clawed back to tie it up at 12.

A-State then took a 16-15 lead on a block by Kendahl Davenport and Stanford and would reclaim it for good after the Mavericks tied it at 16. After UTA cut it to 20-19 on an ace, the Red Wolves called a timeout, then went on to take five of the next six points to take the set and tie up the match at a set each.

The Red Wolves held UTA to an attack percentage of just .050 in the set and tallied 4.0 blocks. Uhlenhake led with four kills, with Musante supplying nine assists.

SET 3 – UT Arlington 25-22

UTA came out on another early run to lead 4-0, but the Red Wolves fought back to even it at 4-all. A-State then battled back for an 8-7 lead after going down 7-4. The Mavericks then took five of the next six points to lead 12-9 and stretched their lead out to 15-11 before the media timeout.

The Mavericks continued to lead, although A-State cut the deficit down to two multiple times and then down to 23-22 on a kill by Hollingshed. However, UTA took the third set and a 2-1 lead in the match on a block by Simara Peyton and Brianna Ford.

Brown added four kills to her tally in the third set while Hollingshed added three blocks. The Red Wolves continued to hold UTA on the attack despite dropping the set, allowing the Mavericks to hit .000.

SET 4 – A-State 25-22

The momentum continued for UTA in the fourth set, as the Mavericks opened with a 6-1 lead to force an early timeout by the Red Wolves. A-State would not be denied, though, and fought back to take a 14-13 lead, forcing UTA to use its final timeout of the set. After the timeout, the Mavericks tied it up at 14 before the Red Wolves went on a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead at 19-14. A-State continued to hold off a fierce comeback by UTA to force the fifth set.

Hollingshed posted five of her nine total kills in the fourth set to lead A-State with Musante leading in assists with eight.

SET 5 – UT Arlington 15-7

Brown started off the set with a kill to give A-State the first point, but UTA surged back to take a 5-2 lead and force a timeout. The Mavericks extended their lead out to 7-3 but a Sobolewska kill made it 7-4. A-State would struggle to grasp momentum, as UTA added on to its lead and claimed a 15-7 decision in the fifth to win the match.

Brown led the Red Wolves with three kills while Musante registered five assists and five digs. UTA found success on the offensive end in the final set, hitting .480.

A-State returns to the court at 6 p.m. Friday, facing the Mavericks in the second half of Friday’s day/night doubleheader. The matches will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and live stats can be viewed at AStateStats.com.
