FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (8/17/23) – In the season opener Thursday, the Arkansas State soccer team dropped a 6-0 decision to No. 8 Arkansas.
Arkansas (1-0) scored in the fifth minutes and an own goal in the 11th minute saw the hosts take the early 2-0 advantage on A-State (0-1). The Razorbacks added two goals in the last six minutes of the first half to take a 4-0 lead to halftime. Arkansas tacked on two goals in the second half, in the 54th and 68th minute, respectively, to set the final tally.
The Razorbacks finished the evening with a 34-7 shots advantage, 12-4 in the second half. Arkansas placed 16 shots on goal. Darby Stotts paced A-State with three shots, one landing on goal. Sarah Strong, and Kennedy Horn added shots on frame in the match.
Damaris Deschaine started between the posts for the Red Wolves and logged a career-high 11 saves in 70:41 played. True-freshman Taylor Sweat got the call for the remainder of the match. Sierra Cota-Yarde earned the win for Arkansas making three saves.
A-State plays its home opener Sunday at Noon against Southern. Admission is free at the A-State Soccer Park.
