MONROE, La. (1/28/24) – Derrian Ford and Taryn Todd combined for 38 points, but the Arkansas State men’s basketball team was unable to come away with a tough road win, falling 85-82 in overtime at ULM Sunday inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Ford recorded his first career double-double with career highs in points (20) and rebounds (12) and went 8-for-8 at the foul line, while Todd tallied 18 points for his fifth straight double-digit outing.

A-State (8-13, 4-5 SBC) owned a 41-26 lead at the half, but the Warhawks (7-12, 3-6) rallied back to force OT on a game-tying trey by Nika Metskhvarishvili and then outscored the Scarlet and Black 11-8 in the extra period.

Metskhvarishvili led all players with 24 points and 11 rebounds off the bench and was one of four Warhawks to score in double digits.

The Red Wolves won the rebounding battle, 50-48, including 20 offensive rebounds for the second straight game and third time this season. A-State shot 32.9 percent (24-73) from the field and went 23-for-28 (82.1 percent) at the foul line, while ULM shot 39.5 percent (30-76) and hit 21 of 29 free-throw opportunities (72.4 percent). From the perimeter, the Red Wolves hit 11 of 39 (28.2 percent) while the hosts made 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) – all in the final 25 minutes.

A-State led for nearly the entire first half, surging out to as much as a 17-point lead after a pair of Ford free throws made it 37-20 with four minutes left in the half. After ULM pulled back to within 13 on a Metskhvarishvili score, Ford converted two more at the stripe to put his team ahead 41-26 at the break.

The Warhawks clawed back to within single digits after a pair of free throws from Jacob Wilson, but back-to-back treys by Ford and a 3-point play by Izaiyah Nelson expanded A-State’s lead back out 16 with less than 12 minutes left. Metskhvarishvili and Wilson sparked an 11-2 ULM run to make it 65-62 inside the final three minutes, while the Red Wolves answered with scores from Julian Lual and LaQuill Hardnett.

Arkansas State maintained a lead until Metskhvarishvili sank a three with five seconds remaining, ultimately sending the contest to overtime – A-State’s first OT period under head coach Bryan Hodgson.

Todd and Ford combined for the first five points of overtime to push the Red Wolves’ lead out to five, but the Scarlet and Black would be held without a field goal for the final four minutes. Makai Willis converted a 3-point play to place the Warhawks ahead 82-81 with 45 seconds to go, but Fields tied it at 82 with a free throw seconds later. Tyreese Watson then clinched the win for the home squad by banking in a trey with nine seconds to go.
