LAFAYETTE, La. (10/24/20) – In the series finale on Saturday at Earl K. Long Gym, Arkansas State dropped a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-20) sweep to Louisiana.
A-State (6-5, 6-5 Sun Belt Conference) kept all three sets close throughout, but the Ragin’ Cajuns (13-4, 7-4 SBC) picked up late runs in all three sets to take the match.
Madison Brown once again led the Red Wolves in kills with a match-high 18 along with six digs, giving the Cabot, Arkansas, native 67 total kills over the three-match series. Lauren Musante recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 27 assists and 10 digs to go along with a career-high four blocks.
Defensively, Tatum Ticknor led A-State in digs with 16 while Brianna Hollingshed led with six blocks. As a team, the Red Wolves totaled 11.0 blocks, putting them over the double-digit blocks mark for the 10th time in 11 matches and for the 13th time in the last 14 outings dating back to last season.
Kelsey Bennett led Louisiana in kills with 15 while collecting 12 digs for a double-double. Avery Breaux dished out 40 assists while Hannah Ramirez led all players with 21 digs. Kara Barnes was the top blocker for the Cajuns, knocking down five.
SET 1 – Louisiana 25-21
The opening set was back and forth for nearly the entire set, with neither team able to take full momentum. The teams traded leads four times while also seeing 13 ties in the first set until Louisiana went on a 3-0 run to lead 21-18 and force an A-State timeout. A kill by Hollingshed cut the deficit to 21-19, but another 3-0 spurt by the Ragin’ Cajuns gave them set point up 24-19. After the Red Wolves called another timeout, they saved two match points on a service error followed by a Ticknor ace, but Louisiana would get a kill by Bennett to end the set.
SET 2 – Louisiana 25-23
A-State opened up the second scoring three straight to lead 3-0 before Louisiana tied things up at 3-all. From that point on, the set was just as back and forth as the first, with 14 ties and five lead changes and neither team leading by more than three. A 3-1 run gave the Ragin’ Cajuns a 20-18 lead, but then the Red Wolves reclaimed the lead at 22-21. Louisiana then took three straight to lead 24-22 and force an A-State timeout. After the break, Brown saved a set point with her 10th kill of the match, but a kill by Lauren Tishkoff ended the set in Louisiana’s favor.
SET 3 – Louisiana 25-20
Both teams kept the third set close, until Louisiana went on a 4-0 run to take a 12-17 lead and force an A-State timeout. The Red Wolves would cut the deficit to 13-11 on a kill by Brown, which would force the Ragin’ Cajuns to call a timeout. After Louisiana called another timeout when A-State tied it up at 19 on an attack error, the Ragin’ Cajuns took six of the next seven points to end the match on an ace by Ramirez.
A-State returns to action for a two-match in-state rivalry series at Little Rock. Friday night’s contest at the Jack Stephens Center is slated for a 6 p.m. first serve, while Saturday’s match is set for 1 p.m. Both matches will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and live stats can be viewed at AStateStats.com.
