LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (10/20/20) – Six rounds of golf are complete for the Arkansas State men’s golf team this fall and the Red Wolves earned a second-place finish at the Little Rock Invitational Tuesday to conclude the fall portion of the 2020-21 season.
The Red Wolves posted a final round 5-over par 293 to place second at 18-under par 846 for the tournament. The field featured seven Sun Belt Conference teams. Host Little Rock carded an 18-under par 270 to top A-State by 14 strokes. UT Arlington was third (-16), ULM fourth (-15) and Louisiana (-13) fifth.
“Obviously, we want to win every event and we know we have a lot of firepower that can shoot low numbers and we finished second in a good field on a really good course,” said A-State head coach Mike Hagen. “If you told me before we started last week at the home event that we would finish first and runner-up, I’d take that all year. We didn’t know what we would be able to play this fall and we were able to play two solid events with some really good golf. We didn’t have our best stuff today, but we come out of the fall at 21-1 and 7-1 against our conference opponents.”
Zan Luka Stirn had the low round of the day for A-State with a final round 3-under par 69 to finish tied for seventh at 4-under par 212. Jack Madden also tied for seventh individually with a final round 73 (+1). Julien Sale and Luka Naglic tied for 14th at 2-under par 214 while Tom Vaillant tied for 39th at 4-over par 220. Adam Thorp finished tied for 72nd with a 14-over total of 230.
“Little Rock played really good golf today on their home course,” said Hagen. “We put ourselves in a good position going in to today’s round, but it was a tale of two days. Yesterday, we played 27 great holes with that first round and the back nine of the second round. I thought we would go out today and shoot 10 or 11-under, but Luka (Naglic) struggled to get anything going and it was a constant struggle for him even though he hit good shots. Jack (Madden) had a solid round, but couldn’t get stretches of birdies going and he put a lot of pressure on himself down the stretch. Julien (Sale) and Zan Luka (Stirn) are always going to grind it out and make a lot of birdies while playing the par-5s well. We wanted to win, but we’re not going to let one round define how this fall has gone for us. We’re in a good spot heading into the spring with a tournament victory and a runner-up finish after not playing since early March.”
The spring schedule for A-State will be posted on AStateRedWolves.com at a later date, but the Red Wolves are tentatively scheduled to begin the spring at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas Feb. 22-23.
