LINCOLN, Neb. (3/5/23) – Entering positional round bracket play Sunday at 9-1, the Arkansas State women’s bowling team won both matches to finish the Big Red Invite at 11-1.
A-State (63-27) got past Quincy in the first match 4-3 and then defeated host Nebraska in the final match of the event. Nebraska won the event based upon the most total pinfall with the Red Wolves second.
Quincy topped A-State 176-164 in game one, but A-State gained a 2-1 lead with wins in game two, 218-189, and three, 223-166. Quincy won the next two games, 237-203 and 213-194, to lead 3-2. A-State pulled out a six-pin victory in game six, 208-202, to force a decisive game seven. The Red Wolves prevailed 212-167 in game seven to clinch the victory.
The Red Wolves took game one against Nebraska by 10 pins, 209-199, and then took a 2-0 advantage with a 210-195 total in game two. A-State rolled its highest game of the day in game three, 234, to build a 3-0 advantage before Nebraska answered with a 237-219 margin. The Red Wolves closed out the best-of-seven series with a 214-201 decision in game five.
Maggie Thoma was awarded Tournament MVP honors following the event. She led the field with a total of 1,157 pins, an average of 231.40. It marks the third different A-State individual to lead the overall individual standings in the last three events.
A-State closes out the regular season March 17-19 at the Music City Classic hosted by Vanderbilt ahead of the Southland Bowling League Championship March 24-26.
