A-State Captures 16 Victories at UCA Fall Invitational

September 22, 2019

CONWAY, Ark. (9/21/19) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team kicked off its 2019 fall tournament season with an in-state trip to Conway, Ark., to participate in the Central Arkansas Fall Invitational.

The tournament began on Friday with two rounds of doubles’ competition and continued into Saturday with three rounds of singles’ flights and another round of doubles flight brackets. Over the course of the tournament, Arkansas State captured four doubles wins and 12 singles victories.

“Our depth was really good and that is as consistent of a competitive effort as I could have asked for in our first fall tournament,” said A-State head coach Kel Lange. “It was tough conditions and because of rain yesterday, some of these kids played five total matches today. We showed a lot of toughness and concentration over a long period of time. We have plenty to work on, but this group can be special. I look forward to seeing us come out next week and play even better.”

Amelia Guevremont and Jill Morse opened their doubles campaign with a 6-3 win over a pair from Oral Roberts. Guevermont and Morse went on to defeat a duo from Central Arkansas 7-6, but lost in the final 6-4. After an opening round 6-4 loss, Pornpawee Pramethong and Berta Masdevall Masip came back for a 6-3 decision against a tandem from Murray State and a 6-4 victory against a duo from Oral Roberts.

In singles action, A-State had five players earn two victories for the weekend. Pramethong lost her initial match in flight one, but rallied back to win her next two contests. She took the first set against Minetti of Northwestern State before falling 0-6 and 5-10 to close the match, but earned an 8-6 victory against Cox-Evans of Harding and an 8-3 decision over Slezakova of Murray State.

Shannon O’Brien, Berta Masdeval Masip, Guevremont and Babos each earned two singles victories as well. O’Brien defeated Vidnere of Northeastern State (6-3, 6-3) and Polanska of Northwestern State (6-2, 6-3) while Masdeval Masip defeated Dancetovic of Northwestern State (8-6) and Miley of Oral Roberts (8-3). Guevremont added to her doubles victory with singles triumphs over Gutierrez of Oral Roberts (6-1, 4-6, 10-4) and Martin of Missouri State (6-0, 6-1). Babos posted wins against Shaw of Harding (4-6, 7-6, 10-5) and Jenkins of Harding (8-3).
