MADISON, Miss. (4/24/23) – The Arkansas State men’s golf team began play in the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Golf Championship at Annadale Golf Club Monday and are 12th among 14 teams after the opening round.
Getting off to a rough start, A-State was a combined 10-over par after the first two holes, but just 6-over the remainder of the round. The Red Wolves closed out the first round at 16-over par 304 and are 13 strokes back of Texas State (+3) and South Alabama (+3) for fourth place and advancement to Thursday’s match play semifinals. Troy holds the opening round lead at 4-under par 284 with Louisiana (E) and Southern Miss rounding out the top three.
Thomas Schmidt had the low round of the day for A-State at 3-over par 75 finishing even-par on his last 11 holes. Luka Naglic and Jack Madden each turned in 4-over par 76 rounds while Jack Maxey overcame a triple-bogey on the second to finish at 5-over par 77. Devyn Pappas totaled 11-over par 83 in the first round.
