A-State Baseball Drops Midweek Game at No. 7 Ole Miss

Written by Press Release

April 18, 2018

OXFORD, Miss. (4/18/18) – The Arkansas State baseball team fell behind early and couldn’t recover as No. 7 Ole Miss plated seven runs in the first two innings on its way to a 10-3 win over the Red Wolves in midweek action Wednesday night at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field in Oxford, Miss.
The Rebels (30-8) opened the scoring with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first as A-State (12-21) starter Zachary Patterson was a bit unlucky as two of the three base knocks were infield singles. Andrew Leggo swatted his first career home run in the top of the second with an opposite-field shot over the right-field bullpen to make the score 3-1. However, the Rebels bounced back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of two-run long balls to push the A-State deficit to 7-1.
Mississippi added three runs in the fourth and fifth innings on a wild pitch, RBI ground out, and infield hit to push its lead over the Red Wolves to 10-1. Austin Miller entered the game for Ole Miss in the top of the sixth with Jeremy Brown greeting him with a double, his 11th of the season to tie for the team lead. Winston Welch drove Brown in with a single and later scored on Jacob Jablonski’s first career triple to set the score at 10-3, which would go on to be the final.
Jordan Fowler went five innings to earn the win for the home team as he allowed one run on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Patterson took the loss as he allowed six runs in 1.2 innings, while Carter Holt allowed four runs in 3.1 innings. Korey Wasson, Payton Lannon, and Chase Nix all pitched a scoreless inning with the final two being perfect frames.
Brown, Welch, and Jablonski led the Red Wolves with two hits apiece at the dish as the team tallied nine hits on the night, but left 10 runners on base and only went 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Ole Miss had 11 hits on the night with Ryan Olenek, Nick Fortes, and Will Golsan all posting two each.
Arkansas State returns to action this weekend against Sun Belt foe Troy April 20-22. A-State and Trojans open the series Friday night at 6:30 p.m. with the whole series to be broadcast on ESPN3.
