CALLING ALL BAKERS! Do you think you have the winning recipe? KLEK is giving you the opportunity to show the community what you’re working with. Here are some little known facts about how the sweet potato became a staple in the African American diet. During the 16th Century, the British introduced Pumpkin Pies as dessert in West Africa. The Africans switched to using yams then sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes and black eyed peas were fed to the slaves during the Middle Passage. As the slaves made the pie for large gatherings in celebration and as a part of family meals, the tradition has continued for family gatherings and black family reunions today.
We invite you to submit up to five different recipes for the Sweet Potato Pie Contest. The entry fee is $10 for one pie or $20 for 2-5 pies. The limit is 5. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place prizes awarded. Judging will be anonymous. You do not have to be present to win. The deadline to register and submit entry fee is June 1, 2019 by 11:45 pm.
